Oral hygiene

The first step in caring for your teeth is ensuring you have set an effective oral hygiene routine. You should brush your teeth twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste while using interdental cleaning aids like floss, tape or interdental brushes to clean over most of the tooth surfaces that brushing alone cannot reach. Doing this regularly ensures food particles do not remain trapped between teeth. If they are not removed, bacteria will begin to thrive on them causing tooth decay and periodontal disease in the long term.

Regular Dental Appointments

You should go for a dental examinations regularly- at least once in 6 months. The dentist will thoroughly examine your mouth, teeth and gums. This ensures any problems are spotted early and treatment planned created for the problem. The dentist may also advice that you see an hygienist for regular scaling and polishing as well as oral hygiene advice.  By ensuring plaque and stains are not allowed to build up, you ensure your teeth remains as healthy for as long as possible. After each appointment, the dentist or hygienist will help you schedule your next appointment. Usually at a time when you might need it.

Healthy Diet

A health diet is one that contains the necessary vitamins and minerals that are crucial to maintaining strong teeth and bones. Calcium is a mineral found in dairy products and is very crucial to teeth and bone health. Calcium can be found in milk, butter, yogurt and some breakfast cereals. Vitamin C is crucial to gum health and is found in citrus fruits like oranges, limes and lemons.Sugary and sticky foods that stick to spaces between teeth and small gaps should be avoided where possible. It is better to restrict them to meal times to prevent regular acid attacks on the teeth.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a safe and  effective way of brightening the color of your teeth. Teeth whitening can remove staining caused by foods, alcoholic beverages, smoking, medications and aging. There are two types of teeth whitening. They are:

  • At home tooth whitening

The dentist takes your teeth teeth impressions and creates custom whitening trays. The dentist will then show you how to load the trays with whitening solution and how long you will them. Usually it is worn between 30 minutes to 8 hours depending on the strength of the gel and how quick you want to see results. This can be done in your own time and done in a time that is suitable for you.

  • In surgery tooth whitening

For this a whitening gel is applied  to your teeth in a dental surgery and is then activated using a blue light. This process is repeated between 3 to 5 times in an hour session. It is advised that a home tooth whitening course follows after a surgery tooth whitening to ensure you get the best possible results.
